Sometime in October 2021, we woke up to the news that a combined team of village scouts and Zambia Wildlife Authority officers got into bitter combat with the villagers of Muwele, in which about 24 people got injured. The informer said ZAWA officers used live ammunition in the nasty exchange that erupted over the villagers’ protest against officers’ arresting one of them, who they allegedly found with game meat.    It all happened like a dream.  Fewer people remained in the village because many were in Nkutu, the seasonal farming camps. The rainy-season weather was cold, with sunshine showing up in an on-and-off pattern. Tall, green grass characterized pathways as the smell of ripe mangoes filled the air.   I woke up to the news that Mungwi Boys Secondary School had selected  us,  with two others.  Rasford was beaming with joy when he came to announce the news, braving heavy morning dew. His admission forms were well-tugged in his pocket when he joked that we had all failed for the second time before he patted me on the back and told me to relax and go and collect my acceptance letter. My heart sunk in relief.  Ten others were to attend different secondary schools from Muwele Primary School in 1981. Our long wait for Grade 7 results finally ended around mid-February. WHO ARE WE? BANGWEULU OR CHAMBESHI SWAMPERS

    If you can answer this question honestly, then you will not be afraid to answer others who may want to know more about you by posing the question, “Who are you?” Everyone has a story. In truthfully telling that story is embedded the exact characteristics that define them. If you do not tell your story, others will; and usually, you will not completely be happy with stories told about you by strangers.   This is true about an individual, family, race, or tribe.  For a long time, many people have told stories of the Unga people of Bangweulu swamps. Some of them it is because they have stayed with us for some time, some have visited for a short time, some have inquired, or formally, did some research about the tribe. Would you tell the origins and character of a man by the piece of cloth he hangs around his neck? Nor would you, by the way he polishes his boot?    Not until you get him to talk about himself. Otherwise, you will be judging a book by its cover. In this post, I digress from telling you about the how to of fishing, just to break the monotony. I present to you a bite of my true story having grown up in two spheres of one Bangweulu Swamps. It’s a portion of hardships, probably not so different from any other Unga and Bisa child brought up in a poor rural setting. Ng’ungwa lies at the very edge of the Bangweulu Swamps in the east and is famous for hosting coveys of black lechwes, sitatungas and the famous shoebill stork. It forms a boundary between the Bu-Bisa main land of Chief Chiunda Ponde and the Ba-Unga swamps of Chief Bwalya Mponda. It is home to Chikuni, a Ramsar Site , recognized as a Wetland of   international importance;   and also as an Important Bird Area
